The Rainbow Serpent — The Great Life‑Giver

Before the world had rivers or mountains, before the first bird sang or the first tree grew, the land was silent — flat, dry, and waiting. Beneath that stillness, deep under the earth, a great being slept. Its scales shimmered with every color of the rainbow, though no light yet existed to reveal them. Then, one day, the earth trembled. The Serpent stirred. And the world began to change.

With a roar that echoed through the void, the Rainbow Serpent rose from the darkness. As it moved, its colossal body carved deep channels into the land — twisting, turning, shaping valleys and mountains. Where its belly pressed, rivers formed. Where its tail struck, hills rose. Where its breath touched the soil, life began to bloom.

Water poured from its mouth, filling the channels it had made. The dry earth drank deeply, and the world awoke — green and alive. Birds took flight. Animals stirred. The sky shimmered with color for the first time.

The people who came after called it the Great Life‑Giver, for it had brought water and life to the land. But they also learned to fear its power. For when the Serpent slept, the world was calm. And when it stirred in anger, floods and storms swept across the earth.

Even now, when rainbows stretch across the sky after a storm, the elders say it is the Serpent rising once more — reminding all who live upon the land to respect the rivers, the mountains, and the sacred waters it created.
